Being Present and Choosing Gratitude With Black-Owned Yoga-wear Brand, Hey Sis LA
As Black women, it is perhaps more important now that ever to stay grounded.
With all that has been placed at our feet and all that we want from the world, reaching higher heights will require us to become very familiar with re-centering ourselves.
Hey Sis LA , is a brand that not only understands the power of gratitude, getting centered and staying grounded, but has infused these concepts into their yoga-wear.
In short, they are the manifestation of stylish basics and intentional, timely sentiments.
Based in Pasadena, California and created by Ashley Jackson, Hey Sis LA is all about helping Black women master their peace using fashion and it shows.
“I want to be able to help black women because there's so many health benefits of yoga, not just our body, our mind and our spirits but the way that we think and interact with people, “ says Jackson. “My goal is to kind of share what I learned and put that into clothing, but also create a community just around health and wellness, health and wellness.”
After getting let go from her corporate job in January of 2019, Jackson decided to take it as a sign from God and pour her everything into her side hustle — she’s seeing the fruits of her labor but not without traveling a winding road.
“It's been a very long journey. I've been trying to start a business for the last seven years. I started in 2014 and was just buying wholesale clothes for a little boutique and I realized that's not it because it just felt so fake to me. I wanted to create something.”
From that space, Jackson shares that she developed what could be considered the first iteration of her current brand, a blog and t-shirt line called “The Life of Her.” It was the louder, more quippy sister to her current brand with t-shirt and cups that reminded us to “meditate & chill the fuck out” or “say your prayers & wrap your hair.”
As she’s grown and gotten deeper into her yoga practice, even completing a 200 hour yoga teacher training, so too has her brand.
“With the evolvement of my mind body spirit, I ended up with Hey Sis LA. It's such an outpour of me and my love and what I've learned through my yoga journey,” Jackson says.
Like many of us, 2020 brought its fair share of dark moments, uncertainty and even fear, but also, inspiration. Jackson shares that her time in quarantine has shaped her current line in a profound way.
“I know people have had completely different experiences, I really just got to hang out with myself and calm my thoughts down and everything just started hitting me. I had this wall in my living room. I bought hella post its. Whenever I would get an idea I stuck it on the wall,” she shares. “That wall got so large with affirmations to myself, it felt kind of like I was talking to myself from my higher self. I still have those posts and everything that I'm coming out with now, as a result from them, so I'm playing off of that.
When it comes to the meaning of luxury, Jackson’s stance is one that you would expect from someone who prioritizes gratitude.
“Luxury means fullness in every aspect of your life,” she says.
And her advice to other Black women entrepreneurs?
“Trust yourself, your own ideas and that what you have to say is beneficial and valuable. No one else has your story or your brain and your ideas. Really focus on yourself and your business and don't compare your chapter five to someone’s chapter 80.”
A word.
