A Bespoke Fragrance Experience Reminded Me That I’m My Own Muse
The word muse is defined as “a source of inspiration,” and an afternoon spent at L’Artisan Muse reminded me that I am in fact that for myself.
Housed in Atlanta, GA, the luxury fragrance and sensory experience is comforting like a warm hug, intense like a calm storm, and easy going like a Sunday afternoon. Throughout my private 1-on-1 session, I crafted not one, not two, but three bespoke fragrances that were especially poured, mixed, and sprayed just for me.
As I walked into the sunkissed space, I was met by soft music, fresh flowers, and vibrant green plants, and a vibe that summoned serene and peaceful energy. Surrounded by crystals, oils, and with Faloune James, Master Artisan & Maison Director, as my fragrance guide, I set an intention for my first bespoke perfume. Rooting my thoughts in the things I needed, I chose the word ecstasy and thus began the journey of creating something of my very own.
I’ve always been drawn to warm scents like vanillas and ambers, that remind you of a heat that won’t scald you. As I described the notes that captured me to Faloune, the oils that took up shelves of inventory space began to call out to her. She pulled a handful of bottles as the music in the background changed from track to track like a jazz rendition of Anthony Hamilton’s “Charlene,” even Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love For You,” songs that are in heavy rotation on my own personal playlists.
Taking me through a blind sniff test of the pulled oils, I had a range in which to order them--from “yes” to “hmm” and before long, my scent would soon be mixed.
As I sipped a teacup full of their lavender Nirvana blend and chatted with Faloune about everything from my life, to my goals and even my biggest fears. Before I knew it, the first of my three scents were ready, and “Summer Wonder” was born out of notes of vanilla, amber, fig and floral which blended up to be both sweet and light but linger just enough to leave you wanting another whiff.
With a few tweaks, adding a dash of teakwood and a few drops of bergamot and then my second scent, “Quiet Storm,” was crafted as the perfect fall-winter smell good. Finally, as the time approached for the end of my session, Faloune said she wanted to add one more oil to the mix, and “Secret Garden” came to life as a deep and dark special occasion scent that made me want to get all dressed up just to take myself out on a date.
Throughout my entire experience, I was reminded that each iteration of my scent is the perfect combination of what I offer to the world and to myself. Of all the things I am, I am a muse that is gentle, that is deep, and sacred enough to always be treated with care.
